WYFAF BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Chair
Jes Nyffler
Jes grew up in Wyoming, and has been an avid reader her whole life. Weekly trips to the library were a staple of her childhood. Public libraries and the ability to read freely shaped who she is. As an activist from a young age, Jes has found herself perpetually crusading to improve the world around her, and continues to strive for a better Laramie County. She has worked on local political campaigns, has regularly combined her love for teaching yoga with various mental health offerings in the community, currently works in the criminal justice field where her office represents marginalized peoples who are unable to afford representation, and is pursuing a Master of Public Administration from the University of Wyoming. Jes also loves the great outdoors, yoga, and her dog and cat.
Vice-Chair & Founding Member
Suzan Skaar
Suzan is a founding member and current vice-president of WYFAF. Suzan is a native Wyomingite and has been working in different libraries for 45+ years, most recently as School Librarian at South High School in Cheyenne and is recently retired. She was part of Team Lead with the original Bison who helped plan for the opening of the new school in 2009. Suzan attended Casper College and the University of Wyoming receiving a Secondary Education degree, and graduated with a Masters in Library Science from University of Arizona, Tucson in 1988. Suzan achieved the National Board Certification for Teaching in 2013, knowing that it is not only a great personal achievement, it is a strong statement about a teacher’s commitment to the profession and to students and their learning.
Suzan has always had a strong sense of devotion to promote reading and learning to young adults, seeking to turn on the “love of reading” to her students. She believes that if a child doesn’t like to read, they just haven’t found the right book, and her challenge was always to help students seek out that “right” book and spark that love of reading. She also knows that libraries and librarians are crucial to reversing low reading assessment scores of young readers. Our community needs to fight book bans because it is so important that all young readers can discover the very best titles in their school libraries. She calls on the community to support their teachers and school librarians who are trained professionals, and experts in assessing age appropriateness for education and reading materials. We all want our students to grow as learners and reading is the foundation of learning.
Treasurer & Founding Member
Jen Solis
When Jen Solis moved to Wyoming in 1996 at the age of 18, she found her home. Since then, Jen has enjoyed a long career in non-profits, developing skills in program development, operations, finance, grant-writing and fundraising. In 2021 she started her own business, Sol Solutions, to offer her skills to organizations serving the needs of the people of Wyoming.
In the spring of 2023, concerned about efforts to ban and restrict access to books in the local school district, Jen and others formed the Wyoming Family Alliance for Freedom. Believing the freedom to read freely is foundational to the American experience and to her own personal success, Solis will always fight against those who would infringe on the rights of others and defend the Wyoming values she holds dear.
